Check Here Before Surrendering a Pet to TLACAre you considering surrendering a pet to Town Lake Animal Center? Are you worried about what will happen to it if you do? You can get some sense of what it's chances will be by viewing the most recent intake and outcome pages. While any animal's outcome is based in large part on luck and in part on that animal's unique characteristics, you can make a prediction based on the shelter's current status. If the shelter is very full, any new pet will have a much lower chance of leaving alive. High intake indicates the shelter is full. Ex. on May 18 of 2009, 113 animals were taken to the shelter. On May 19, 21 pets were "euthanized." Outcome reports that show many pets being "euthanized" are also a strong indicator that the shelter is full and any pet surrendered will have low chances. Animals that are sick, too young, too old, shy, scared or of certain common breeds like pit bulls will always have much lower chances of leaving alive. Finally, please remember that perfectly nice, healthy or treatable pets die at the shelter when there are dozens and dozens of empty pages. No pet is ever truly safe at a shelter that does not have a "no kill" policy.

Check the Status of Owner Surrendered PetsDid you surrender a pet to TLAC or do you know someone who did? Are you concerned about what may happen to the pet? TLAC is not required to hold owner-surrendered animals for the 3 day stray hold. Owner surrenders can be killed the same day they arrive at the shelter. (The shelter usually holds them for 24 hours.) If you are interested in an owner surrendered pet or would like to try to find it a home, you must act immediately. Start by visiting the shelter and putting in a backup application. This should put a hold on the pet. If you can't adopt the pet, get the word out about the pet by posting online, calling and emailing friends and family, putting up posters, everything you can think of. http://www.austinanimalaware.org/animals/CurrentOwnerSurrenders.htm
