Found PetThank you for contacting Austin Pets Alive! We want to give the pet
you found the best possible chance to be reunited with any owner that
may be looking for him or her. APA cannot step in to try to rehome the pet until the owner has
been given a fair chance to reclaim their pet. Don't assume because the pet is fearful or thin, injured, or dirty that it has been dumped or was abused by its owner. Please review the
guidelines at the following link and follow the suggested steps for
finding the owner.
http://apapass.wiki.zoho.com/Found-Pet-Tips.html
At a minimum we ask that you:
- Contact our Lost and Found program at lostandfoundpets@austinpetsalive.org.
- Walk the pet around the area where you found it asking any passersby if they recognize the pet, and post a message to the neighborhood newsletter or email list.
- Make several large, brightly colored flyers with a brief description of the pet and your phone number and place them around the area where you found the pet.
-
Post an ad on Craigs List with a description of where you found it and how you can be contacted.
-
Take the pet to Town Lake Animal Center to have it scanned for a
microchip, photographed, and registered as a found animal. (Then please take
it home with you, if possible. Or check back in 3 days to see if an owner came forward. Approximately 8,000 pets die at TLAC each year.)
- If someone contacts you to claim the pet, ask them to describe the pet to you in detail, or otherwise provide proof that the pet belongs to them (photos or vet records for example). Don't just take their word for it. Exercise common sense in any arrangements to meet the person.
After
you have followed these steps, if no owner comes forward within 5 days, or if
you cannot keep this pet that long, please contact us again to discuss finding a new home for this pet.
And remember, pets can wander very far from their homes and not all
owners are computer-savvy enough to look on the internet or know about
the shelter, so take all the suggested steps to give the pet the best
possible chance.
Thank you for taking the time to care about this pet.
