INTRODUCTION TO THE P.A.S.S. PROGRAM:

Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (P.A.S.S.) is a service provided by Austin Pets Alive! (APA!)  We work together with you to determine and implement the best solution for you and your pet.  Thank you for caring enough to try to keep your pet out of the shelter.

How we help:

Resources to Help You Keep Your Pet

We can point you to low-cost resources that will help you with any medical issues you are having with your pet. We can provide advice and put you in touch with trainers who can help you resolve behavior issues so you can keep your pet. Many problems that ordinary pet owners find insurmountable can be resolved with help from an experienced professional.

Do-It-Yourself Rehoming

Visit our Rehome Your Pet instruction page to learn how you can rehome your pet yourself. APA can help you get high quality photos of your pet or write a compelling bio to increase your chance of finding a new home. We recommend you post to other sites such as Craig's List, and put flyers up at places like your vet's office.

Ideas to find solutions for a lost or abandoned pet

We help you with ideas on how to find a lost pet, help reunite a found pet, and how to help an abandoned pet find a home.

You can't just drop dogs off at most no kill shelters. Because they are no kill because they have limited space. The shelters that have to euthanize are the ones that take drop offs. That is why they have to euthanize. Most no kill places require appointments.

I was told that two cats could stay at a group home if they were spayed, and neutered. Mom, and son , both are friendly, and comfortable with people. I got them their shots, as well. But now the owner is saying they can not stay there at all.. My own cat situation will not allow me to care for them . I am at a loss any ideas.

The austin humane society reachable by calling 311 may be helpful. They are not in a position to respond right away, I think you have to arrange for an appointment. But they may have some options to explore. I found them sensitive to my situation.
If you need help from the PASS program, please email us at pass@austinpetsalive.org or fill out our contact form at http://creator.zoho.com/austinpetsalive/pass/#Form:Add_New_Case. We would love to help you, but we don't check these comments regularly and if there is no email attached, we have no way to reach you.

I used to volunteer at the Austin Humane Society. I believe the deal is that they DO accept owner surrender animals, but usually there is a bit of a wait list and your animals have to pass health and temperament tests, and you also have to pay a fee. Last time I checked it was 75 or 85 dollars per animal. But Austin Humane Society is mostly no kill, like 95 percent. They only euthanize if the animal has behavioral issues or is chronically ill, or is FIV positive.

If you say you have a stray, though, then they won't help you. You have to say you own the animal and want to do an owner surrender.

I would contact them....
I am in need of temporary housing for my female American Pit Bull while I am in hospital for 90 days. I do not wish to surrender to a shelter or giver her up or adoption as I will reclaim her upon my discharge. She is very sweet and non-aggressive. I would appreciate anyone who has resources available for low-cost "pet-sitting".

i took in a puppy in february that was being left outside while it was cold and snowing. had wanted to keep her but have since found out i was pregnant and my living situation has changed forcing me to move back to my moms who already has three chihuahuas, with my 7 yr old dog, and the 5 month old puppy in question. im getting bigger and the house seems to be getting smaller having all five dogs here. it has become obvious that its not realistic for me to keep the puppy, gracie, but im willing to continue caring for her till i can find her a better more suitable home. i would like to talk to a rescue group but, her being a total mutt, boxer/austrailian shepherd/beagle/dachshund? mix i cant seem to find an appropriate rescue. HELP!!! email pookielicious@yahoo.com

Hi

I have a kitten that was dumped on my place last night. I found it and realized it has some issues with it's back leg. I do not work, and have no money, but took Wednesday to a local vet. They said she needs surgery to amputate her leg at the hip. I can not find a cat rescue close by and I don't want to surrender her to be put down. She has a wonderful personality and strong will to live. Can anyone help me out with her. I just hate the thought of her being put down like that.

Puff, my beautiful long-haired cat, was a gift from my brother and means a ton to me, but I recently moved into a house with a large pit bull in residence and I feel that this is just not the ideal living situation for Puff. He's basically confined to a room because he is very afraid of the dog (who's very friendly btw, it's just the nature of cats and dogs sometimes!). I really hate to give him up, but I also hate that he's confined to such a small space and I think it's really affecting his personality and his happiness. I actually feel that he's really miserable! I'd love to find a home for him where he can be happy and relaxed and be himself! I just don't know what my options are at this point. I've tried Craiglist, but most people are interested in kittens not 3 year old cats. I really need some help exploring some home options for him. If anyone has any suggestions or knows someone who might be interested in providing a new home for Puff, please email me at trevinoveronica@hotmail.com. Thank you!
